Setting Up the "Formatted" Pedigree Report

Adding the Report to your Catalog or Classified Page

Back to Formatting Reports Overview

LEGEND for AQHA symbols:

 "Black type" Explanations

  +    = 1st, 2nd, 3rd dams.
  . .   = offspring of 1st, 2nd, 3rd dams.
. . .   = offspring of dam's offspring .

FORMATTED PRESENTATIONS:   Click to view a pro-presentation of the full report.

A.)  TO PRESERVE "black type"  ~ Copy and paste the report below the pedigree chart into a word processor, such as a word processor, or WordPad where bold text and paragraphing is visible to you.   It is easier to locate them  when you  "tag" them for the database.

TIP:   Another very satisfactory way of retaining the bold formatting is to start a "new" email document in your regular email program (I use Outlook) and choose "HTML" as the format.  (Be sure to do this.)  Copy and paste  the report below the pedigree chart into the blank new email page,  then save the email (CTRL-S)  ...  or click "FILE" from the text menu,  then click "save" from the dropdown.) This will save the file in you email program's Drafts folder. You can even put the horse name in the subject line,  which will make it easy to find in the document list in your email "Drafts" folder.

B.)  CREATING BOLD TEXT:
Immediately in front of the first character of bold text, insert this: <b>
Right after the last bold character in that word or phrase, insert: </b>

These "tags"  tell web pages where to start and end <b>bold text</b>
Do not leave character spaces before or after the text you wish to format as bold text.

IMPORTANT NOTE:   If you start bold text and forget to end it,  all text following the <b> tag will display as bold,  even if you start and end bold tags correctly after a missed </b>

HINT:
If you discover that your entire report is bold,  don't panic.  Just look past the first <b> tag and you will find a place where you forgot to enter an "end bold" tag </b> following a bold word or phrase.  Just type </b>  where the bold text should end and everything will look the way it should.

(If not,  continue looking for another missing tag or an extra "start bold" <b> tag,  and remove it.  Either error can cause too much text to be bold.)

Formatted Performance Pedigree Visual - see how your "Bold" tags should look in the working file.

C.)  COPY YOUR WORKING FILE INTO COMPUTER MEMORY:
Select the entire working report you have just tagged for bold text:

1.)  Highlight the text by dragging your mouse over it,  then
Hold down your CTRL key and tapping the "A" key once. CTRL-A
       (This will select ALL text.)
2.)   Now hold down the CTRL key and tap the "C" key once. CTRL-C  t
(This will  copy the selected text   into temporary memory.)

(See more shortcut tips for copying and pasting here.)

3.)  Proceed with the next step:

D.)  CHANGE TO A TEXT EDITOR:
Open a text editor, such as "NotePad" and place your cursor in the window.

1.)  Hold down the CTRL key and tap the "V" key once. CTRL-V  t
(This will  copy the text from temporary memory into NotePad.)
2.)    The text will now be displayed in paragraphs separated by blank lines.

E.) SAVE YOUR WORKING FILE WITH A NAME
You should save this working text file in a folder you create especially to hold these working performance pedigree files
, such as "perfpeds"

If you name each file using the name of the horse, it will be easy to retrieve later should you want to. Example: Zan Parr Bar's pedigree file might be "zanparrbar.txt" (Text files do allow spaces in the file names, so you might even want to leave a space between the words like this: "zan parr bar.txt")
(See more shortcut tips for copying and pasting here.)

F.) SETTING PARAGRAPH BREAKS:
You must place a tag designating the end of each paragraph in the report.

Otherwise the server will not know where it should end a paragraph.

Place the following tag at the end of every paragraph: </p>
This includes the introductory paragraphs, sire blurbs, dams, and at the end of each offspring listed in the dam's produce records. At this point in the formatting of your report, each paragraph should already have at least one blank line following each paragraph.

You can Copy and paste this "end paragraph tag" </p> down the page after you have hand typed in the first tag.

NOTE:  that the performing offspring performance information will appear initially on 2 lines,  the name, foaling year, color, gender,  and sire on the 1st line,  and the performance data starting on the 2nd line.   It is best  to remove the line break at the end of the first line, because "Catalog Magic" will display the content of both lines with a hanging indent ... a more professional look. (Remove the line break by:  placing your cursor at the end of the first line and tap your keyboard's "delete" key once or twice. A blank character space should automatically be retained ahead of the performance data,  but you might look to be sure.

DO NOT place the </p> tag at the end of every line. ONLY at the end of paragraphs above blank lines. Multiple short sentences not separated by a blank line will be automatically included into it's proper paragraph. (Trust me.)

Formatted Performance Pedigree Visual - "End Paragraph" tags. - see how your "</p>" tags should look in the working file.

F.) SETTING PARAGRAPH INDENT TAGS:
Creating the proper paragraph indenting for the various parts of your catalog style report is an easy task.  Simply place one of 4 special "tags" at the beginning of each paragraph.

1.)  Beginning with the first paragraph, place the tag <P ID=d-> at the beginning of any line that has no special code at the beginning.
(Do NOT insert  before lines with a plus (+) or dots in front of the paragraph!)

DO insert in front of paragraphs beginning with <b> followed by normal text.
Including the paragraphs "<b>1st dam:", "<b>2nd dam:" and "<b>3rd dam:"
You can Copy and paste this tag into your report quickly down the page.

TIP: This tag will never appear below the line beginning with "<b>3rd dam:"
Proceed with the next step:

2.)  Go back to the paragraph which begins with <P ID=d-><b>1st dam:
Working your way down the page, OVER-WRITE + (the "plus" sign) in the original report with <P ID=d1>

TIP: Highlight the + then type or paste in the tag on top of it <P ID=d1>.
Remove any extra spaces that might appear before or after the tag.

3.)   Go back to the paragraph which begins with <P ID=d-><b>1st dam:
Working your way down the page, OVER-WRITE . . (double dots) in the original report with <P ID=d2>

4.)   Go back to the paragraph which begins with <P ID=d-><b>1st dam:
Working your way down the page, OVER-WRITE . . . (triple dots) in the original report with <P ID=d3>

Formatted Performance Pedigree Visual - "Paragraph Indent" tags. - see how your  tags should look in the working file.

SUMMARY of Paragraph TAGS:
Replace  +   (plus sign) in the original report with this: <P ID=d1>
Replace  . .    (double dots) in the original report with this: <P ID=d2>
Replace  . . .   (triple dots) in the original report with this: <P ID=d3>

You can Copy and paste your way down the page, as before.) Do not worry if this causes odd breaks in your sentence structures, as the database ignores more than single blank spaces!

YOU ARE DONE!
At this point, if you have not saved your work along the way, your should SAVE it now. If you gave the file a name when you started, all you need to do is click the "save" icon on your program's tool bar, or click "FILE > Save" from the text menu at the top of your screen.

Now you are ready to Add the Report to your catalog page or classified ad.

  OPTIONAL ... EDITING YOUR REPORT:

If you wish to make your finished report shorter, you can now go through and delete less important information which you do not wish to display. There is usually a fair amount of this, since the information is offered as a "semi-edited" report.

Now you are ready to Add the Report to your catalog page or classified ad.
